Afterlife of The Clock Wife, Part 2: Writing the Memory Archive: Writing Workshop with Ellena Savage

‘That which survives in the archive does so by chance. Disappearance is the rule.’
—Susan Buck-Morss, The Gift of The Past

Neuroscientists tell us that each time we recall a memory, we are recalling (and altering) our last recollection of that memory. Political philosophers remind us that the way we remember is historical in nature; memory structures our identities and relations in given times and places, and is used to serve political theology—the dominant cultural metanarratives. Meanwhile friends, lovers, siblings and enemies contest our most mundane recollections.

Memory and the challenges it presents—formal, ethical, and strategic—therefore make for rich literature. This workshop will consider various literary approaches to writing forgotten memory, contested memory, and collective, historical memory. In this workshop, writers will respond to readings and prompts in an attempt to capture and analyse personal, communal and spacial memories, with the aim of building a memory archive to use as an artistic resource. All are welcome to attend.
