Duotones: A series of artists talking

Talk #1: Toon Fibbe and Han Hoogerbrugge
Moderated by Antye Guenther, representing Varia

Hosted by TENT, Coolhaven 32, Rotterdam

Join us next Friday, May 9, for the beginning of Duotones: A Series of Artists Talking—a new program of artist talks organised by A Tale of A Tub and Studio Art Office/CBK R’dam and hosted by TENT. The series is an attempt to put different generations of Rotterdam-based artists in conversation, and to kick it off we’ve invited Toon Fibbe and Han Hoogerbrugge to unpack their approaches to working with digital technologies and across mediums—from animatronics to mask-making to illustration and animation—as a means for exploring identity construction and value production, both on and off the screen.

Unfolding over the next six months on a monthly basis, each talk will see two artists from different generations paired together, during which they will (casually) present their practice before a third artist will act as moderator for a conversation. More often than not, we encounter each other’s work as a finished product, presented to the public in the form of a thoroughly thought-out outcome. Given this, aside from connecting the different communities of the Rotterdam art scene—such as longtime locals and newcomers who have recently settled in the city—the goal is to also try and enter the working process while it is in development, say, having early conversations in public. Drinks and snacks will be provided and the hope is that the series becomes a social staple for many of us to finally meet.

Biographies

TOON FIBBE (1987) is a visual artist who investigates the development of the financial sector and its effects on the shaping and visibility of identity. Fibbe attempts to uncover the entanglements between the creation of financial credit, the formation of the social person and the development of literary character.

HAN HOOGERBRUGGE (1963) is a Dutch artist known for his pioneering work in digital and interactive art. He began his career as a painter and illustrator, but in the 1990s he discovered a new medium in the internet, through which he further developed his unique style. His work is characterized by a mix of dry humor, surreal imagery, and a critical view of modern society.

Representing Varia, ANTYE GUENTHER is a visual artist and artist-researcher deeply invested in exploring non-digital research methods to challenge powerful digital systems. At the moment, she is focusing on collaboratively examining biometric data software visualisations, looking at what kind of hierarchies, norms and ideologies are installed in the underlying 3D imaging practices. VARIA is a space for developing collective approaches to everyday technology. As a member-based initiative, Varia maintains and facilitates a collective infrastructure from which they generate questions, opinions, modifications, help and action.
