The Smallest Gesture
YOERI GUÉPIN
September 16 – November 5, 2023
In his work, YOERI GUÉPIN connects social processes with ecosystems. His practice consists of research projects, performative lectures and workshops, ecological community projects, films and installations. For his solo exhibition The Smallest Gesture, Guépin is working with his father and grandmother on a film and installation in which they link the loss of biodiversity and industrial forms of agriculture to his father’s illness. How can we tell stories from marginalized and more than human perspectives that give us new insight into the current epistemological socio-environmental crisis?
Biographies
YOERI GUÉPIN (he/him) is a visual artist, researcher, and passionate gardener. His projects are long term and collaboratively oriented, involving experimental forms of care, working with embodied knowledge, storytelling, and ecosystems at the margins. His experience of being brought up at a biodynamic farm, helping his parents in the fields from a young age led to an interest in (agri)cultural histories. Guépin holds an MA from the Dutch Art Institute. His work is nominated for the Dolf Henkens Prize (2023) and has recently been exhibited at TENT Rotterdam (2023), the Sharjah Biennale (2023), and Kadist San Francisco (2022). In 2022, he was a fellow at Stiftung Künstlerdorf Schöppingen. He is a resident at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht for 2023–2024
